(From the Joplin Police Department)On December 31st, 2025, officers with the Joplin Police Department opened an investigation on an unknown individual using false identifications and forged checks.
During the investigation, the Joplin Police Department’s FLEX Platoon discovered that the suspect entered several local businesses, presented counterfeit identifications, and paid for property with fraudulent manufactured checks.
As the investigation continued, Matthew Harvill, 37, of Joplin, was developed as a suspect. It was determined that Harvill resided in Newton County, Missouri. At that time, Harvill also had several active felony warrants for his arrest from other jurisdictions in Missouri. The warrants were for stealing and forgery.
On January 12th, 2026, a search warrant for Harvill’s residence was obtained through the Newton County Prosecutor’s Office as a result of the ongoing investigation. Joplin Police Detectives and the Newton County Special Response Team served the search warrant at 4226 Coyote Drive, Joplin. Harvill was taken into custody for his outstanding warrants, and a search of the property was carried out.
At the conclusion of the search warrant, an estimated $130,000 in stolen property was recovered. Items included a 2026 Honda motorcycle, a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado, and a 20-foot flatbed trailer.

In addition to the stolen items, there were numerous forged checks and manufactured identifications recovered. Equipment used to illegally manufacture the checks and identifications was also seized. During the search of the residence, substances were located that tested positive for methamphetamine.
Harvill was transported to the Newton County Jail where charges for Forgery, Possession of a Forging Instrument, Trafficking in Stolen Identities, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia were submitted to the Newton County Prosecutor's Office for consideration. Additional charges have also been submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor's Office for Felony Stealing.
