As he awaited arrest for allegedly murdering the mother of his 3-month-old child, a Monett man could be heard saying, "My son will grow up without a dad," according to a probable cause statement filed today in Barry County Circuit Court.Alan Michael Mellow, 33,has been charged with first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and one count of first-degree child endangerment following the shooting death of 30-year-old Hannah Lee Blizzard, also of Monett.
The domestic dispute that Monett Police say led to Blizzard's death was detailed in the probable cause statement.
Cpl. Iannaccone then spoke with W1, who stated he saw a white male, about 6’04” tall, shoot the woman who was on the ground. This woman was later identified by Cpl. Iannaccone as V1. W1 also told Cpl. Iannaccone that the male shot V1 3 times at close range, then went into Apartment #328 with an infant. W1 said he thought the suspect’s name was Alan.
Cpl. Iannaccone, along with Barry County Deputies Calderon and Hightower, began evacuating and clearing the surrounding apartments. While outside of Apartment 328, he heard a male state “my son will grow up without a dad”.
Monett Officers summoned additional resources, including all Monett Detectives and a Special Weapons and Tactics Team from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
When I arrived on scene, Sgt. J. Givens from the Highway Patrol was speaking to the suspect via telephone. Sgt. Givens was able to convince the suspect to surrender and turn the infant over to police.
The suspect, now identified as Mellow, was taken into custody without incident. Due to a malfunctioning camera system at the Monett Police Department, Mellow was transported directly to the Barry County Jail by Deputy Calderon.
Detectives Brown and Salazar processed the scene and released V1’s body to the Barry County Coroner. A search warrant for the apartment was obtained, and Detectives Brown and Salazar recovered a loaded Taurus PT809c semi-automatic handgun, SN TI217929, caliber 9mm inside the apartment on the kitchen counter, along with a nylon type holster and a spare 17 round magazine.
The weapon contained a partially expended 13 round magazine. Of note, the magazine in the weapon contained Winchester hollow point ammunition and the spare magazine was loaded with full metal jacketed rounds.

I went to the Barry County Jail to interview Mellow. He was escorted to an interview room, where the interview was recorded with both audio and video. Prior to questioning, Mellow was advised of his Constitutional Rights per Miranda. He signed a written waiver of those rights and agreed to speak with me. Barry County Detective Abby Parsons was present for the interview as well.
Mellow told us that he and V1 had recently had a child together, and identified the 3 month old child as V2. He told us V1 had a severe alcohol addiction that he was trying to help her with.
He said that today they were arguing about her alcohol use and the fact she had stolen coins from his coin collection, which he believed she used to purchase alcohol. He said V1 decided to call her mother and leave with the child. Mellow said he would not allow that and decided to leave himself with the child.
Mellow said he took V2 outside to his vehicle and was pursued by V1. He said he put V2 in the backseat of the vehicle and he got in the driver’s side. V1 went to the passenger side and got in the vehicle, to prevent him from leaving with V2. Mellow said his handgun was in the vehicle, and when V1 got in he shot her “a couple of times” in the head.
Mellow said he then went to the passenger side of the vehicle and opened the door. He said he intended to dump her out and leave the scene, but instead took V2 out of the vehicle and went back inside his apartment, where he was later contacted by Sgt. Givens.
V2 was transported via ambulance to Cox-Monett Hospital for evaluation. Due to suspicious injuries, V2 was transferred to Cox-South for further treatment. V2 was determined to have a skull fracture of as yet undetermined nature and was transferred to St. Louis.
Mellos is being held without bond in the Barry County Jail.
