Governor candidates debate education

"We need to respect the profession of teaching," Jay Nixon said, after Kenny Hulshof said nothing about teachers in his statement of education.

Nixon says the MOHELA sale has hurt Missouri.

Hulshof said charter school competition is needed, as well as merit pay for "teachers who are getting the job done."

A questioner brought up the subject of vouchers.

Nixon said Hulshof's voucher plan would not work, "taking away public dollars to give to private schools" will not work.

"Charter schools are public schools," Hulshof said. "You have to take on the teachers' unions," he added.
