Globe endorsement of Obama rankles some readers

The Joplin Globe's remarkable record of not supporting a single Democratic candidate for president since William Jennings Bryan in 1908 ended Wednesday when the newspaper gave its stamp of approval to Barack Obama.

Think about that. The Globe Editorial Board endorsed Wendell Wilkie over Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940, and Tom Dewey over Missouri's own Harry S Truman eight years later.

So what happens when the Globe breaks from its century-long precedent and endorses a Democrat?

Just check out the comments section on the newspaper's website.

Some of the readers are canceling or threatening to cancel their subscriptions. They have every right to do so, but it seems childish to cut off the Globe just because its editors don't agree with your opinion.

Unfortunately, that is what our nation has become- a land where disagreements are no longer acceptable. To some people, if you're not on their side 100 percent of the time, you are the enemy. (And that applies to Obama supporters as well as those who favor John McCain.)

Check out those comments. There are some howlers on both sides.

The problem is that the Globe's editorial board is an echo chamber filled with liberal Democrats. The retirement of Clair Goodwin removed all sense from that body. The editorial did not serve as an effective endorsement because they did not approach the decision with skepticism. They looked at the opportunity to back their man and rebel at the same time with the enthusiasm and wits of teenager climbing out the bedroom window to meet her boyfriend.

"An echo chamber filled with liberal Democrats?" Where did this commenter come from? Speaking of echo chambers, many people around here believe that anyone who doesn't support the entire Republican party must be one of those awful liberals. Note to all Republicans, you're going to get creamed on Nov. 4 and liberal is not a bad word. In fact prepare for a liberal dose of Democrats in Washington on Jan. 20 and when you cry about what happened, be sure you are looking in the mirror because you will only have yourself to blame.

Hey anonymous 11:56. I think that anon 9:52 was saying that all of the Globe's current editors are liberal so it shouldn't be a big surprise that they picked Obama. It would've been a better endorsement if the centrist or right Globe editorial board of past decades picked a Democrat.

Oh, who gives a rip, anyway? Liberal, conservative, it's all gonna be the same old crap, anyway. If you're rich, you'll get richer no matter what. Meanwhile, the poor continue to get screwed. I'm so sick of this election, I could just puke. Are these candidates, any of these candidates, the cream of the crop? Is this the best we can do?

I see the Globe is going to offer a story this weekend looking at Joplin during the Great Depression. I'm sure that's to warn us of our fate if we don't elect the Most Merciful Messiah Lord Barack Hussein Obama. Will they mention how Roosevelt's socialism that Obama idealizes lengthened and worsened the Depression? I doubt it.
