Roll Call: Ultimate outsider Billy Long chooses insider as chief of staff

Billy Long was elected Seventh District Congressman after a campaign in which he styled himself as opposed to Washington insiders, but the person who will run his office is a dyed-in-the-wool insider, according to an article in today's Roll Call:

After the election was sealed, Long’s rhetoric didn’t cease. When he came to the Capitol in November for orientation, he announced in a press release, “Mr. Outsider Meets the Insiders.”

But Long not only met the insiders, he hired one of them as his chief of staff. Joe Lillis has been legislative director to Rep. Lynn Westmoreland since 2005, and before that, he worked for the Georgia Republican’s predecessor, Rep. Mac Collins (R), and former Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Ore.).

Do you think the MSM is picking up on what we have been saying about Long for months now?

this is typical "Turner Stupid."

Do you expect a new legislator to choose a staff as green as they are? I would choose a veteran staffer who could help me navigate unfamiliar waters. Anyone one in a new position needs a mentor and all the help they can get.

Actually, this came from Roll Call, which has a reputation for being conservative.

I would have picked someone from Missouri, from the 7th District, who knows our people and the area.

Doc Hall and Gene Taylor had Gerry Henson from Joplin, don't recall who Hancock had but Roy Blunt had Gregg Hartley. These two people where from this part of the country. Probably one of the smartest moves he could have made would have been to ask Nodler to help him get his feet on the ground in Washington for a couple of years.

I do not know who is advising Long but I'd have to say the Steelmans, Gordon McKinney, and Jeff Layman probably made the recommendation.

Over 600,000 people live in the 7th District and surely Shirley, one of us could do the job.

As Randy White said, "You can't fix stupi........Billy."
