Recordings of interviews with Jalen Vaden, Devyn Kyle among items turned over to defense during discovery process

The defense attorney for Jalen Vaden, 22, Carl Junction, who is charged with murder and felony child abuse in connection with the death of three-year-old Jayda Kyle, has a lot of material to comb through in coming weeks and months.

Documents filed in Jasper County Circuit Court outline the type of evidence Joplin attorney Tracey Martin has received, though they do not go into specifics about what each of the items contains.

The supplemental discovery sent to Martin by Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney Theresa Kenney includes interviews with Vaden, Jayda Kyle's mother Devyn Kyle, her maternal grandmother Carmen McPherson, Jayda's father Mackenzie Kyle and Jayda's five-year-old brother.


Police reports have indicated that Vaden, Devyn Kyle and the brother were in the home at 405 Meadow Lake Drive in Carl Junction November 28 when Jayda Kyle suffered the abuse that led to her death three days later at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.


Among the evidence provided to the defense during the discovery process were cell phone records of Devyn Kyle, her father Judd McPherson and recordings of calls made by Jalen Vaden from the Jasper County Jail.

A flash drive was sent to Martin containing the following items, according to the court documents:

-Cellular telephone records for Devyn Kyle

-Cellular telephone records for Judd McPherson

-Video recording of interview with (Jayda's brother)

-Notes from interview with (Jayda's brother) at the Children's Center

-CARE examination for (Jayda's brother) submitted by the Children's Center

-CARE examination for (Vaden's child) submitted by the Children's Center

-Copies of mail received by the defendant while in custody

-Six audio recordings of calls made by defendant at the Jasper County Jail

-Four pages of defendant's call history at the Jasper County Jail.

-In-custody minister sign-in sheet

-Audio recording of November 28 interview with Carmen McPherson

-Audio recording of November 28 interview with Devyn Kyle

-Audio recording of November 28 interview with Dr. Liza Murray


-Audio recording of November 28 interview with defendant

-Audio recording of November 28 interview with Mackenzie Kyle.

-Video recording of December 6 interview with Devyn Kyle

-Video recording of December 6 interview with the defendant.

-Jayda Kyle's medical records from Children's Mercy Hospital

-Letter from Dr. Liza Murray regarding victim diagnosis

The Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's office also sent Martin a DVD containing a forensic cell phone examination for an iPhone 7 belonging to Devyn Kyle and two DVDs containing a preliminary forensic cell phone examination an iPhone 7 belonging to Devyn Kyle.

Earlier, the prosecuting attorney provided the defense with a list of evidence that included some of the items provided to Martin in the latest discovery.

Also included on that list were the Miranda Warning signed by Vaden, crime scene photographs, search warrant photographs from December 6 and 7, an audio recording of the 911 call, the preliminary autopsy report, Vaden's written statement, a 27-page report from the Carl Junction Police Department and a 53-page report from the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

    He does NOT have a bond hearing any longer , why do people keep asking ? He doesn't deserve to be free

    bond hearing has been pushed back (again) to March 12th, 2018. Not sure where 6:28 got that mis-information from. On casenet from Feb 23rd docket entry states that the motion for continuance is granted.
