"I've been back and forth on this 20 times," Mayor Ryan Stanley said, going into full Hamlet mode before switching his vote from the one that helped put the mask ordinance into effect to the one that killed it, bringing lusty applause from the socially distanced crowd members.
Stanley and Chuck Copple switched their votes from the July 8 special council meeting when it enacted the mask ordinance, joining council members Gary Shaw, Phil Stinnett and Doug Lawson in the majority.
Voting to extend the mask ordinance to September 20 were council members Keenan Cortez, Diane Reid Adams, Anthony Monteleone and Christina Williams.
Those who want to celebrate the elimination of the mask ordinance will have ample opportunity to do so since the council then voted eight to one with Monteleone casting the one "no" vote to jump immediately from Step Two to Step Four of the COVID-19 recovery plan, removing all occupancy limitations on businesses, including bars and restaurants.
Social distancing will still be required.
