Liberty Utilities asking for sharp increase in fuel adjustment charge

(From the Missouri Public Service Commission)

The Empire District Electric Company d/b/a Liberty (Liberty) has filed a request with the Missouri Public Service Commission to adjust the fuel adjustment clause (FAC) charge on the bills of its electric customers.

Liberty made two filings.

In its first filing (Case No. ER-2022-0274), Liberty proposes to adjust the FAC charge to reflect the actual energy costs incurred by the Company, less an adjustment pertaining to “extraordinary costs” associated with the February 2021 cold weather event (Winter Storm Uri) during the six-month period September 2021 through February 2022. The second filing is Liberty’s true-up filing (Case No. EO-2022-0275).

For a residential customer using 1,000 kWh (kilowatt-hours) of electricity a month, the current FAC is approximately $7.12 a month. Under this filing, Liberty seeks to increase the FAC charge to approximately $12.97 a month. The proposed change would take effect on June 1, 2022.

Applications to intervene and participate in these cases must be filed no later than April 15, 2022, with the Secretary of the Missouri Public Service Commission, P.O. Box 360, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102-0360, or by using the Commission’s Electronic Filing and Information System (EFIS) at www.psc.mo.gov .
