Citing his lengthy list of crimes and a history of violence, the government wants a Joplin man charged with involvement in a meth distribution conspiracy to spend 30 years in prison.
Jason A. Russell, 33, a member of the Joplin Honkys gang, is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday, May 19 in Springfield, for his crimes, which occurred between April 2019 and February 2021, according to the indictment.
The government did not feel the same way about Russell, according to the sentencing memorandum, which was filed today in U. S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri.
After some traffic offenses in his teens, the defendant escalated to more serious crimes at the age of 21 when he committed the offense of driving while intoxicated. That same year, when his ex- girlfriend came to his house to retrieve some items, he struck her in the head and threw her in a ditch.
In April 2011, law enforcement officers discovered the components of a methamphetamine lab during the execution of a warrant at the defendant’s home.
In August 2011, the defendant was found in possession of stolen electrical grounding rods and a stolen pick-up. That same month, he stole tools and copper wire from Joplin Industrial Electric.
In 2012, he was sent back to prison on the new cases and his probation was revoked. He was paroled in January of 2014.
In January 2015, he had methamphetamine and a firearm.
In December 2015, the defendant was involved in the horrific assault of J.M. When police went to arrest him in January 2016 for the assault, he refused to come out of his house. A witness reported that the defendant said he was a Joplin Honky and “would not submit.” The defendant only surrendered after the SWAT team gassed his house. He was sentenced to prison in September 2016.
During his time in prison, he incurred 31 violations and attempted to orchestrate the assault of several individuals. The defendant was then paroled in January 2018.
In April 2018, he fled at speeds up to 130 miles an hour from an officer who tried to stop him because his motorcycle had no plates. He was returned to prison at the end of May 2018. He was discharged from prison in January 2019.
Drug distribution messages in the defendant’s Facebook account began as early as April 2019. In July 2019, the defendant enlisted others to carry out assaults for him.
That same month, he threatened N.B. and his mother.
July 2019 was also when the defendant shared a video of himself assaulting someone and threatening that person with a firearm.
In the current case, the defendant was arrested with approximately 893 grams of methamphetamine following a traffic stop. Prior to being pulled over, the defendant tried to convince the driver to flee from the police.
Even if the defendant had not qualified under the Guidelines as a career offender, the defendant is very much what most members of the community would think of as a career offender. The defendant’s past history on supervision is abysmal, showing that he is not a good candidate for a shorter sentence coupled with a longer term of supervised release.
This defendant has never demonstrated that he can or that he desires to be a productive and law-abiding member of society. This defendant is a violent individual, who is a constant danger to the community, who desperately needs to be deterred, and who has absolutely no respect for the law.
A sentence of 360 months is a sentence that punishes him for the crime he committed here and meets the other goals of sentencing.

Hey there anonymous. Did you make that comment because you actually know him? Because I don't believe that you do. He would do any and everything to help someone out. This article was wrote to give the belief that he is nothing but bad. That isn't the case however. Not the Jason I know.

Just throwing it out that the person he beat up with j.m was a known child abuser and woman better. J.m put a child in the hospital and wasn't any better of a person and is dead because he was beating up a woman and got shot. Not saying this guy is any better but let's not try to cover it up. Also most of these people involved in these Incidents were in the drug world. Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

The last I heard, a search party was being organized to look for it. The last place I saw it was in the government's last case involving one of the gang members.
I don’t know the guy, but his record speaks for itself, good guys don’t hit women, good guys don’t steal, good guys don’t endanger others with a high speed chase because he’s done something wrong and doesn’t want to pay the consequences, everyone makes mistakes but you must own your mistakes and deal with them….

Couldn’t agree with you more!! Jay and I have known each other for 17 years now and while I won’t say he’s a total angel, I will say he’ll be there when you need him. He’s made some mistakes but who among us hasn’t? I’ve told him time and time again do I prefer him to be in prison over the graveyard? Absolutely! But 30 years is extreme in my opinion
30 years for some dope child molesters m murderers dont get that much time these sentencing guidlines need to be done away with people losing theyre whole lives.
I have known him 20+ years and half this articles facts are vague lies or half the story. I think it's bullshit 30 years is extreme bullshit. He would give his own life for someone he loved and has respect when others did not so no matter what someone thi KS it's their own opinion but really shouldn't talk about someone you don't even know. Cause I would give him the shirt off my back and trust him with my life and everything I have.
