Eric Burlison: ATF must be abolished

(From Seventh District Congressman Eric Burlison)

This week, I introduced the Abolish the ATF Act to safeguard Americans’ Second Amendment rights and protect law-abiding gun owners from the relentless bureaucratic overreach of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).

The ATF is a disastrous agency that time and time again infringes on our constitutional liberties.

Some of the most egregious examples include the agency criminalizing stabilizing braces, forcing Americans to pay a tax to exercise their Second Amendment rights, and constantly changing compliance demands that entrap Americans and make them felons overnight.

From the horrific events that unfolded with Waco, Ruby Ridge, and Operation Fast and Furious, it’s clear the ATF has a long track history of abusing its power and harming or in some cases murdering American citizens in cold blood.

It’s also a duplicative agency that's mission is already carried out by local law enforcement. The ATF is not an ally to the Second Amendment and law-abiding firearm owners across America. It must be abolished.

The ATF is necessary because republican leadership and their illegitimate leech-like bedfellow, the NRA, has bastardized the 2nd amendment into making America one of the most violent nations on earth (Ukraine, Haiti, might be worse). What other nation has as many school shootings and a suicide rate by firearm higher than the US?.....none. The "dems are coming after your guns" is worn out fear mongering for the ignorant maga segment of America.

Say what you want about your opinions on gun control, but it's almost comical how the Republican response to "we should probably increase gun control to prevent shootings from happening" is to try and abolish the ATF. It is my sincerest hope that eventually they will come up with a solution that isn't "thoughts and prayers" and getting rid of laws that we probably need.

The most recent mass casualty event was done with a pickup on new years day in New Orleans. Moral of this story? One we hear all the time: "People Kill People".

But guns deliberately kill more people than cars. Fact.

The local prosecutor’s prosecution of felons in possession of firearms is laughable. Plea to a misdemeanor and the gun charge disappears. With ATF, in the Dederal system, they go away for a whole. That’s a real deterrent.

I don't think you could carry a pickup into a school and start running over children.

The ATF is a useless regulatory agency full of bureaucrats, most of whom know absolutely nothing about the guns the seek to "regulate". I've never heard of a criminal who checked with the ATF for their guidance in whether the pistol grip they are using is legal or not. They exist purely to harass law abiding citizens and to collect fees from legitimate gun dealers. Good riddance.
The answer is always less government.

You fail to see my point. Lets just give up now and you think what you want.

The only way to stop gun violence is total and complete gun confiscation. House to house door to door. Looking for 450 million guns that may or may not be out there. Then in the end the only folks with guns will be the criminals. Who wants to volunteer for the crew that does the door to door thing? I will be busy myself.

Republican leadership puts more effort into curtailling underage smoking than underage death caused by firearms. They don't want to lose the rural uneducated voter!

This is just malarky because they absolutely utilize local and federal law enforcement to prosecute people that legally buy and smoke marijuana. They aren't protecting your gun rights, they are just trying to protect right wing criminals from prosecution while reserving the right to harass and infringe on the rights of people that they deem against their own ideology, which is also illegal in Missouri. They passed laws that say law enforcement in MO won't enforce federal anti-gun legislation, but then still wield it against people with real problems to worsen their charges. Gross.

Whatever way you look at it 609, the magats aren't going to do anything about military grade weapons. They consider a mass slaughter at a school, church, or shopping mall, acceptable collateral to maintain the ignorant and deplorable voting block that keeps them politically employed.
