Five arrested in Cherokee County investigation into sex trafficking of children

On February 5th and 6th, 2026, several law enforcement agencies joined forces with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an operation that targeted offenders, who prey upon underage victims. 

The operation was conducted in Cherokee County, and 5 people were arrested for multiple charges. The charges include Commercial Sexual Exploitation of a Child, Unlawful Use of a Communication Facility, Aggravated Human Trafficking, Aggravated Indecent Liberties (Attempted), and Electronic Solicitation of a Child. Charges were submitted to the Cherokee County Attorney’s Office for consideration on the five people who were arrested in this operation.

Derek McKenney, age 31, of Sarcoxie MO

Sheriff Henderson stated, “This operation shows the importance of law enforcement agencies working together to protect those that we serve. I would like to thank the law enforcement officers and crime analysts that came together from across the state to work with us and make this operation possible. We will continue to protect our children from those that choose to prey upon them and take advantage of them while they are vulnerable.”

Multiple agencies were represented to include, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, the Cherokee County Attorney’s Office, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, the Ray County Sheriff’s Office (MO), the Bourbon County Sheriff’s Office, the Greenwood County Sheriff Offices, and Homeland Security Investigations.
