Faculty and staff at Pleasant Valley Elementary School in Carthage were told this week the R-9 officials plan to close the school at the end of the current academic year and send students to Steadley Elementary next year.
Multiple R-9 employees confirmed the plan to the Turner Report. The announcement was made to Pleasant Valley staff after school Friday.
Pleasant Valley has the smallest enrollment of Carthage's elementary schools and reportedly Steadley has several empty classrooms.
Full-day preschool classrooms will be added at Steadley and half-day pre-school classrooms at Mark Twain, sources said.
If the plan, which has not yet been approved by the R-9 Board of Education goes into effect, Pleasant Valley Principal Don Cox will become an assistant principal at Carthage Intermediate Center.
District officials reportedly have plans to use the building for a different purpose.

This reminds me of the good old days riding my bike down the street with my transistor radio listening to Mickey Dolenz singing Pleasant Valley Sunday! Does anybody else have any good memories of the Monkees they want to share? And please keep it PG, there may be some younger readers out there. We don’t need any degenerate stories about the swinging 60s or whatever. You can listen to good music OUTSIDE the bedroom once in a while.
