Anyone with any concern about Sen. Jeff Smith, D-St. Louis, missing any of the 2009 legislative session due to his trial in the infamous Isle of Capri case need worry no longer.
Smith's trial date has been scheduled for June 25, 2009, nearly two years after he was initially arrested at the Isle of Capri Casino in Boonville for using the identification of Rep. Joseph Aull, D-Marshall. The trial will be held in Cooper County. Aull, whose trial date is also June 25, 2009, will be tried in Pettis County on a change of venue.
The incident occurred July 31, 2007, when Cooper used Aull's identification at the suggestion of Isle of Capri lobbyist Lynne Schlosser. Ms. Schlosser will also be tried in Pettis County.
Smith, Aull, Aull's wife Candee, and four other Democratic legislators, Rep. Judy Baker, D-Columbia, Sen. Chuck Graham, D-Columbia, Sen. Jolie Justus, D-Kansas City, and Sen. Wes Shoemyer, D-Clarence, were at the casino as part of a junket financed by Isle of Capri lobbyist Chris Liese, who spent $910 for meals and drinks for the contingent.
