Of course, Globe reporters would be all over any Joplin or regional business that laid off workers or ordered them to take unpaid furloughs. Don't blame the reporters though. This hypocritical policy comes directly from the top.
This passage was included in Editor & Publisher's article on the furloughs:
CNHI corporate executives declined to respond to requests for comment, but other sources within the company have confirmed the second five-day requirement, which affects all employees. The latest furlough must be taken some time during July, August and September.
"It is difficult because by then we are knee-deep in vacations," said Bob Grady, editor of The Press-Republican of Plattsburgh, N.Y. "We will get through it all right. People are giving us their lists of dates for the third quarter. It is tough because that is the preferred vacation season. It is also tough for people who are on the low pay scale."
During the first round of furloughs, Grady said the impact had been minimal, but noticeable: "We have had to bring some people in at time-and-a-half to cover a furlough day. But not enough that it does not make sense economically."

Having once been editor of the Southwestern weekly competing with the Globe, and a newsman for KFSB 1310 when the paper was more complacent...I wonder how we can tell if they are on furlough?
Is this really your business?
Yes, it is our business. One, the absence of staff, whether it be in the newsroom or in other departments affects the quality of the newspaper. Two, we have the issue of people whose job it is to keep the public informed doing their best to write about the problems facing other businesses, but keeping silent on their own.
Randy - Anonymous (2:11) hit the nail right square on the head....it is none of your business. If the newspaper wants to write about it, that's fine...if they don't that is also just fine....they don't owe you one thing, Randy....not one thing...I'll bet you don't even pay for a subscription....they aren't obligated to you to report anything...that's their call whether it's about their business or about what's going on in the public square...It's all THEIR call and you just take it or leave it...they will do their job the way they choose just as you do your job the way you choose...you're the one feeding from the public trough..get over it Randy, you failed to make a go of it as a journalist...tend to the job you have
What happens to the Joplin Globe is a matter of public concern and it is most definitely news. I sincerely hope the last tirade did not come from a reporter. If that is the case, with that kind of attitude about what constitutes news, you belong in a different line of work.
I wholeheartedly agree with that.
Bruce Speck likes furloughs!
