Latest National Weather Service update on 2011 blizzard for Joplin, southwest Missouri

A BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM CST WEDNESDAY.

* SHORT TERM TRENDS...HEAVY SNOW IS OCCURRING ACROSS THE AREA AS
OVER 3 INCHES HAVE OCCURRED NORTH OF THE INTERSTATE 44 CORRIDOR
WITH AREAS ALONG AND NORTH OF A JOPLIN TO CAMDENTON LINE ALREADY
RECEIVING 6 TO 12 INCHES OF SNOW THIS MORNING. THUNDER IS ALSO
BEING REPORTED ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE AREA...WHICH IS LEADING
TO HOURLY SNOW FALL RATES TO EXCEEDING 2 INCHES AN HOUR. NORTH
WINDS HAVE INCREASED ACROSS THE AREA AND WITH THE HEAVY SNOW IS
RESULTING IN VISIBILITIES DROPPING BELOW ONE QUARTER OF A MILE.
WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE TODAY AS GUSTS TO 40 MPH WILL
POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. THESE CONDITIONS WILL
RESULT IN BLIZZARD CONDITIONS INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS.

* TIMING AND AREAS AFFECTED...SNOW WILL CONTINUE ALONG AND NORTH
OF I-44 INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS...WITH A CONTINUED MIX OF SNOW
AND SLEET POSSIBLE SOUTH OF THE INTERSTATE THIS
MORNING...CHANGING OVER TO ALL SNOW THIS AFTERNOON.

THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION WILL LIKELY FALL THROUGH 3 PM TODAY.
SNOWFALL RATES BETWEEN 2 AND 3 INCHES PER HOUR WILL BE POSSIBLE
WITH THE HEAVIEST SNOW.

* SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATIONS...STORM TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS RANGING
FROM 12 TO 22 INCHES ARE EXPECTED FOR AREAS ALONG AND NORTH OF
THE INTERSTATE 44 CORRIDOR. THE HEAVIEST SNOW TOTALS WILL BE
FROM A JOPLIN TO OVER THE TRUMAN LAKE AND LAKE OF THE OZARKS
REGION. LESSER AMOUNTS WILL BE POSSIBLE SOUTH OF THE INTERSTATE.

* ICE ACCUMULATIONS...STORM TOTAL ICE ACCUMULATIONS WILL RANGE
FROM A THIN GLAZE TO AROUND ONE QUARTER OF AN INCH.

* WINDS AND VISIBILITY...NORTH WINDS WILL BE SUSTAINED BETWEEN 25
AND 30 MPH TODAY...WITH GUSTS TO 40 MPH AT TIMES. WHEN COMBINED
WITH HEAVY SNOW TODAY...VISIBILITIES WILL LIKELY DROP TO BELOW
ONE QUARTER OF A MILE AT TIMES. WHITEOUT CONDITIONS WILL BE
LIKELY AT TIMES DURING THE DAYTIME HOURS TODAY.

* IMPACTS...ROAD CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE TO DETERIORATE THIS
MORNING. THE MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION REPORTS THAT
ROADS ARE SNOW AND ICE COVERED. AS THE HEAVIEST SNOW MOVES INTO
THE AREA...ROAD CONDITIONS WILL BECOME VERY POOR AND DANGEROUS.

EMERGENCY RESPONDERS IN SOUTHEAST KANSAS REPORT HAVING GREAT
DIFFICULTY RESPONDING TO ACCIDENTS DUE TO THE TREACHEROUS ROAD
CONDITIONS AND REDUCED VISIBILITIES.

THE OKLAHOMA HIGHWAY REPORTS THAT ALL HIGHWAYS...COUNTY
ROADS...CITY STREETS AND INTERSTATE 44 ARE IMPASSABLE AND THERE
ARE NUMEROUS VEHICLES IN THE DITCHES AND OR STUCK IN THE ROAD.
AS A RESULT INTERSTATE 44 IN OKLAHOMA HAS BEEN CLOSED AT THE
MISSOURI BOARDER.

THIS AMOUNT OF SNOW AND SLEET WILL CONTAIN GREAT WEIGHT AND
MAY LEAD OT ROOF COLLAPSES ESPECIALLY TO OUTBUILDINGS AND DOCKS
WITHIN THE HEAVY SNOW BAND WEST AND NORTH OF SPRINGFIELD INTO THE
LAKE OF THE OZARKS AREA.

BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES WILL OCCUR FROM TONIGHT THROUGH
FRIDAY MORNING. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES WILL OCCUR EARLY
THURSDAY MORNING...AS READINGS ARE FORECASTED TO DROP BELOW ZERO
OVER THE ENTIRE REGION.
