City of Joplin releases guidelines for tornado debris removal process

With a nice weekend ahead and many getting out to work on the tornado storm areas, the following guidelines have been established to expedite the debris removal process.

· Please separate debris into these six categories:

1. Electronics – Television, computer, stereo, phone, dvd player.

2. Large Appliances – Refrigerator, washer/dryer, air conditioner, stove, water heater, dishwasher, microwave (do not leave doors unsealed or unsecured).

3. Hazardous Waste – Oil, batteries, pesticide, paint, cleaning supplies, compressed gas.

4. Vegetative debris – Tree branches, leaves, logs, plants.

5. Construction debris – Building materials, drywall, lumber, carpet, furniture, plumbing, siding.

6. Household garbage – Bagged garbage, discarded food, paper, packaging, clothing.

· Debris should be placed curbside.

· Debris should not block roadway or driveways.

· If possible, do not place debris near or on trees, poles or other structures, this includes fire hydrants and meters. Doing so makes removal more difficult.

· Debris should be cut into manageable and stackable sizes.
