(From the City of Joplin)
Tornado debris removal continues to make great progress, but there is one problem that has developed that needs corrected – putting tornado debris in black, plastic bags and placing them on the curbside.
Beginning Tuesday, July 12, this process of bagging up non-hazardous tornado wreckage will be disallowed and, instead, the City asks that residents leave the debris loose on the curbside or public rights-of-way for pickup.
“An abundance of black bags is beginning to accumulate on curbsides and public rights-of-way and that’s creating an issue for the government-funded contractors, because they can’t determine whether the debris inside is regular garbage or needs special handling,” said Jack Schaller, assistant director of public works. “So, we’re asking everyone to stop bagging debris. If it’s not asbestos-related, just put it on the curb for pickup and they’ll get it.”
Schaller said bags already in place on the curbside by the end of Monday will be picked up under a special one-time arrangement. After that, residents will need to dispose of bagged debris by taking it to the City’s citizen drop-off site at 901 N. Black Cat Rd. daily between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. until further notice. There is no charge to residents for this service.
Citizens are encouraged to not handle any debris that could be considered hazardous, such as asbestos. If you find this debris on your property, call the Tornado Assistance Information Line (TAIL) at 417-627-2900 to report it.
Officials also remind citizens to continue segregating debris resulting from clearing properties or in cases where residents are demolishing their own structures and placing in separate piles at the curbside. That debris should be separated the following ways: Vegetative, White Goods, Electronics, Household Hazardous Waste, Construction Debris and Small, Motorized Equipment.
