MODOT issues winter travel advisory for Joplin area

Winter Travel Advisory
Wednesday Evening into Thursday Morning, Jan. 8-9
 
Freezing rain, freezing drizzle and snow possible starting Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra travel time during the period.
Weather Forecast: Rain and possibly freezing rain are forecasted to begin Wednesday afternoon across southern Missouri.  Later in the evening, rain will change over to freezing rain and freezing drizzle as temperatures drop below freezing.  Snow also is possible at times Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Road Clearing: MoDOT crews will be out starting Wednesday evening ahead of the storm.  They will treat and plow roads as necessary.  Road conditions will not improve until the system moves out of the area sometime Thursday morning.
Travel Conditions: Roads may be slick in areas where freezing rain, freezing drizzle and snow are falling.  Drivers are urged to slow down and drive according to conditions.  Allow extra travel time to your destination especially Thursday morning.

More Winter Weather Driving Tips:
  • Buckle up.  
  • Adjust your speed to road conditions.
  • Stay at least 100 feet behind a truck plowing/treating the road. 
  • Keep your windshield and other windows clear to help you see. 
  • Be alert for changing road conditions. 
  • Don't tailgate. 
  • Focus on driving and avoid distractions.
  • Allow for extra travel time.
