Family of Webb City man shot to death in road rage incident files wrongful death lawsuit against his killer

The family of David Reynolds (pictured), killed at age 27 as the result of a road rage incident June 9, 2018, filed a lawsuit against his killer Tuesday in Jasper County Circuit Court.

The man who killed Reynolds, Chris Montz, 26, Neosho, was charged with first degree murder, but under a plea bargain with the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's office, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and is serving a 15-year sentence.

The events that led to Reynolds' death were described in the petition:

On or about the Ninth day of June, 2018, defendant Christopher David Montz was operating a 2016 Toyota Scion motor vehicle in the northbound lanes of Missouri Highway 249 in Jasper County, Missouri.

At that time and place, decedent David Christofer Reynolds II was operating a 2012 GMC Terrain motor vehicle, also in the northbound lanes of Missouri Highway 249 in Jasper County, Missouri.

Defendant Christopher David Montz was operating his vehicle in excess of the maximum speed limit when he perceived that decedent David Christofer Reynolds II cut defendant off in traffic. Defendant Christopher David Montz had also activated strobe light added to his vehicle.

Defendant and decedent then pulled to the shoulder of the road, with the engine operating. Defendant withdrew an automatic pistol with which decedent was mortally wounded.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit are Reynolds' father, David Reynolds, Stark City, his widow Amanda Reynolds and her children, Webb City.

The family is represented by Glenn Russell Gulick of the Joplin law firm of Johnson, Vorhees and Martucci.
