Missouri teacher tenure bills have been left the same...for now.
Sen. Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield, tabled SB 806, which would increase the amount of time it takes teachers to receive tenure from five to 10 years, the longest in the nation. It will likely come up again in the near future.
She made the move following debate including questions about why Mrs. Cunningham's bill, which is obviously an education bill, was handled by her General Laws Committee, rather than by the Education Committee.
Some did not want to pass the measure because they did not want to double the time it takes teachers to receive tenure, they want to eliminate tenure completely, while others felt the measure was simply another attack on classroom teachers.
