Gov. Jay Nixon today was named chair of the National Governors Association (NGA) Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee by NGA Chair Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin and NGA Vice Chair Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper.
The Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee has jurisdiction within the NGA over homeland security, the National Guard and homeland defense, criminal justice and public safety and veterans affairs. Members of the committee ensure that the governors' views are represented in the shaping of federal policy.
"I'm honored to head up this vitally important committee," Gov. Nixon said. "Keeping communities safe, and helping them prepare for and respond to natural disasters, has been a key focus of my administration. By working closely with local first responders and our strong network of volunteer and faith-based organizations, we have greatly enhanced our ability to respond effectively to all types of emergencies. I look forward to working with my fellow Governors on ways to continue to strengthen our response capabilities across the nation."
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder will serve as vice chair of the committee.
