U.S. Rep. Billy Long issued the following statement after attending the dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting for the new Joplin High School,
"No doubt Joplin has been through a lot since that fateful day of May 22, 2011, but in times of trouble comes opportunity, and this community has really come together. Today's dedication of Joplin's high school is a testament to the resilience of the Joplin community. People always ask me in Washington how Joplin is recovering and I cannot wait to share with them the news about Joplin's impressive new high school. Tragically, many lives were lost and homes and businesses destroyed, but the one thing the tornado did not take is the sense of community that makes Joplin a welcoming place to live, work, and visit. Joplin is a stronger community today despite the horrific event of May 2011."

I was there! We survived. Politicians, including Huff, need to quit acting like a rooster taking credit for the sunrise! You people are offensive to the survivors, and probably the victims as well.
There were several of us pulling our neighbors from the carnage. Ordinary people doing what had to be done. Not one hero was there. Just average people doing heroic things. You used the Fed to build back a school, despite you and your blunders. Now you milk every drop of this tragedy for your glory. Not the kids. Not the teachers and staff. Not the volunteers that worked around you to save this city. Not one citizen. You won't even share glory with your board. You are a vile little creature who feasts on the tragedy of others. Enjoy every morsel. We paid for your meal in blood sweat and treasure. YOU ARE NOT A HERO. YOU ARE A VILLAIN!

Funny, no one mentioned how poorly the education process is actually going, as we learned from the mouths of the directors at the last BoE meeting, and no one mentioned that there are very few staff members left from the old high school. In fact, teachers were not even on stage. Just hack directors, former BoE members of DUI fame, and the Huff children. Gets you right in the heart. Glad admin and BoE had such a glorious day! Pretty much an epic fail for the community whose students are taking classes in rooms with no walls where they listen to toilets flush and hand dryers all hour. Or sit in the gym or cafeteria because there's no place else to work. Mission totally not accomplished.
A do nothing politician looking for a photo op
There is a reason that we target state controlled media when attacking a totaltarian regime. Take out their propoganda machine in the first round of sorties. CJ uses local media as effectively as any other dictator. That is why free press is such a threat to him. I am not suggesting we are an occupied community...like hell I'm not.
I'm impressed at the level of commentary in these comments. I agree with the talk about Huff exploiting the tragedy for himself, and I do think that's horrible.
It is very offensive that Huff, his friends, and his family are the ones who get to be on the stage. It is definitely all about him, and this was such a waste of time and resources. Who cares if the funds were donated? If people were willing to donate, maybe that is money that could have gone to something more practical.
This was the lamest PR stunt. Some kids got to go, but all the others still had to watch it on tv, and I promise you that nearly everyone found it to be pretty boring (even many of the teachers didn't really mind the kids talking through it b/c they knew what a waste of time it was).
This is some emperor's new clothes type stuff - Huff pretending like it's some great thing when everyone sees through it for the pathetic attempt to squeeze one more drop of sympathy for himself on the backs of the victims, survivors, and volunteers of the tornado. He originally wanted the president to come back, but even Obama's like "I came to see you twice, don't you think it's time to move on? Biden, will you shut this fool up, please?"
Huff doesn't see it, but it's actually hurting his image more than helping him at this point because nobody but the truly ignorant (I see you, Anson) see it as anything but a lame performance designed to improve his image. Within the district, his supporters are those who are equally power-hungry, narcissistic, and mediocre in intellect. With each passing month, he has fewer and fewer friends. He will eventually find some "opportunity" in order to get out before he has to publicly own his mistakes. If anyone will hire him, that is.
