Neosho R-5 School District to extend spring break one week due to COVID-19 concerns

As the ever-changing environment regarding COVID-19 continues to weigh on people’s minds, I want to give an update on what the plan is for Neosho School District.

Today, we had a meeting with 20+ key staff members to discuss what is best for our students, team and our community; reviewed information produced from the Centers for Disease Control, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Governor’s office and local health officials; and consulted with our school board members.

After much discussion, it has been decided that Neosho School District will extend spring break for students through March 22, 2020. Information about staff duties will come in a separate letter. 

During this coming week we will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation both nationally and locally in order to plan for the future. 

Our number one priority is the safety of our students and staff. We are also working on methods of instruction that would continue the education of our students should this become extended. 

It is our intention to provide meals over the coming week to our students. We will be pushing out additional information regarding meals. A survey inquiring of requests for meals will be coming later today or Sunday.

We understand when school is not in session it can create hardships on families. We also realize that we play a key role in social matters of this magnitude. If our cancellation of school creates a short-term inconvenience, but saves a life, it would be worth it. There has been much said of over reactions; however, an under reaction could have significant consequences.

Our country was built by strong individuals, and we will survive this latest challenge. During the process we need to continue to work together and care for each other. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these uncertain times.
