Sam Graves: CARES Act designed to help workers, businesses during incredibly difficult time

(From Sixth District Congressman Sam Graves)

The House passed a third coronavirus response bill, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), designed to help America emerge from this pandemic stronger and more resilient.

Many Americans are suffering from the economic fallout from this pandemic. Millions are out of work and many businesses have temporarily closed up shop.

The CARES Act will help American workers and American businesses during this incredibly difficult time. It temporarily boosts unemployment benefits for the millions of American workers who have lost their jobs and provides many individuals up to $1,200 to help families make ends meet during this difficult time.

It also provides $350 billion for the Small Businesses Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program, which will provide main street businesses the capital they need to keep the lights on and keep their employees on the payroll.

This health crisis is unlike anything we’ve seen before. Our hospitals and healthcare workers are on the front lines of this and desperately need more resources.

The CARES Act provides $117 billion in funding to help hospitals and the Veterans Administration care for patients and protect healthcare workers who are fighting this pandemic. It also provides regulatory relief, dramatically increasing the availability of telemedicine for Medicare beneficiaries to help older Americans avoid exposure to COVID-19.

What’s more, this bill will provide additional money to fund the development of vaccines and therapeutics as well as expand our Strategic National Stockpile of medical supplies to ensure critical supplies like protective masks and ventilators remain available to healthcare workers and patients.

As with any bill that is negotiated—and this one went on for many days—it isn’t perfect. We’ve still got a lot of work to do to help our rural hospitals and communities. I will continue fighting to make sure they receive the resources they need.

Likewise, there were a few things in this bill that I thought were completely unnecessary. Yet, in perilous times such as these, the good far outweighed the bad and this legislation is the fastest way to get folks the help they need as quickly as possible.

The coronavirus pandemic has posed an unprecedented challenge for America, and Americans have responded with unprecedented patriotism—making sacrifices, donating, and volunteering to help their fellow Americans through this. It has been difficult, but it has also illuminated many of the qualities that make this the greatest country on Earth. Right now, we’re struggling. This legislation will give us forward momentum. I am confident that the American spirit will ultimately prevail, and that as a nation we will emerge from this stronger than ever before
