Documents filed today in U. S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri show that Cassville attorney John Learight has signed on as attorney of record for Joplin businesswoman Peggy Newton.
Earlier this week, a federal grand jury indicted Mrs. Newton on 25 counts of fraud and forgery.

All of you who support the Newtons as "kind, honest people" have obviously never had personal dealings with them. They are incredibly self absorbed and think anyone who makes less than them are lesser people in general. They put themselves above all others because of the money they have and are able to influence the Joplin media into never publishing damning things about them. They work hard to destroy the "little people" who are unfortunate enough to fall into their trap of being "kind and honest" until they find out what they really are. The Newtons will try to destroy anyone who questions their "perfection" and are evil!!!
The Newtons are kind people. This is a partnership gone bad. What kind of a woman does not pay attention to a business she partly owns ? The story seems abit slanted. I pray for the Newton family that they can hold their faith and withstand the ugly side of Joplin. Suddenly everyone forgets the good they have done in Joplin

Wow--harsh words about a family that have been in this community for a long time. I also can't imagine how someone could be in business with someone and not know for several years what the financial state is--especially if that partner put up most of the capital. If over a few months this fraud had occured maybe that would be easy to overlook or miss--but a few years? Certainly sounds like someone who was either completely oblivious, in denial, or maybe has a hand in the guilt and it has now gone too far and they can't get bailed out but their even wealthier in-law family. Whichever the scenario I hope that an innocent person isn't on trial. And if Ms. Newton is guilty then she gets the appropriate punishment.
