Hartzler votes to keep taxpayers from paying for abortions

I can't recall seeing anything in the federal health care law that permits abortions, but the House GOP voted Thursday to keep taxpayer dollars from going to abortions, something that is already illegal.

Shouldn't someone tell House Republicans that while they are posturing with this kind of legislation people need jobs? The following news release was issued by Fourth District Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler.

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) has again voted to uphold the sanctity of human life by supporting U.S. House passage of the Protect Life Act, legislation to ensure taxpayer dollars aren’t used to fund abortions under last year’s health care law. Hartzler, a co-sponsor of the Act, has voted to prevent the federal government from funding elective abortions or subsidizing insurance coverage for abortions.

“The government health care law would have permitted funding for abortions in private health plans by skirting the normal appropriations process and avoiding the protections found in the bipartisan Hyde Amendment,” said Hartzler. “Our legislation applies the Hyde Amendment to the health care law by guaranteeing no federal tax dollars go to plans that cover elective abortions.”

“The Protect Life Act prevents the federal government from mandating that private insurance plans cover abortion,” continued Hartzler. “It also prevents the Office of Personnel Management from contracting with or administering health plans that include abortion. These common sense provisions bring last year’s health care overhaul into accord with long-standing policies prohibiting federal funding for abortion. It is unconscionable to force Americans who believe that human life is precious to use their tax dollars to pay for abortions.”

The legislation now moves to the Senate for its consideration.
