Even as the wait continues to see whether Gov. Jay Nixon signs the fix to Sen. Jane Cunningham's Facebook Law, a Feb. 16 hearing wsa scheduled in Cole County Circuit Court for the Missouri State Teachers Association lawsuit challenging SB 54.
The bill was passed overwhelmingly by both Houses and signed by Nixon, but ran into stiff opposition from teachers and parents over the summer. After MSTA filed its lawsuit,a judge issued an injunction preventing the law from going into effect until February.
Meanwhile, Nixon put the Facebook Law on the agenda for the legislature's special session, asking that the social networking provisions of SB 54 be repealed. Nixon's request was ignored and instead, Sen. Cunningham, with help from representatives of the state's teacher organizations, revised the bill, requiring all school districts to come up with a policy on teacher-student communications by March 1, 2012.
