Joplin firefighter Kyle Howard stayed on the job and helped rescue people after his house was torn to pieces by the May 22 tornado.
His wife and four children survived, though he didn't know it for nearly two hours after the twister struck.
Now his fellow firefighters are helping put the family's life back together.
"That's what we do, we're a brotherhood," said Springfield firefighter Marcy Robinson. "We got each others' backs."
Howard's home is one of seven that will be built from the ground up within a week during ABC-TV's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" build that got under way in earnest Wednesday.
