Gannett Co., the biggest newspaper publisher in the United States, with properties including USA Today and the Springfield News-Leader said today second quarter profits were down 4.5 percent, due to the increased costs of newsprint and loss of revenue at its 21 television stations and at USA Today.
Net income was down to $338.6 million or $1.37 a share, according to Bloomberg News, down from $354.4 million, or $1.30 a year earlier. Sales were up 3.4 percent, to $1.94 billion, according to the article.
