Taxpayer March on Washington: A blanket of white

To paraphrase the beginning of the July 21, 1998, column that eventually led to my firing at The Carthage Press- A blanket of white descended upon Washington today.

If you judged the so-called Taxpayers March on Washington strictly by the entertainment and speakers, it would appear to be a rainbow coalition, so to speak. A closer examination of those rapturous faces hanging on every word of these speakers who see America's destruction around every corner tells a different story.

The C-SPAN camera is panning over the crowd at this moment and it is one white face after another.

An early highlight of the march was the playing of the late Ray Charles' version of "America, the Beautiful," and African American and Hispanic speakers have been featured prominently, but that appears to be more window dressing than anything else. It is the same stunt the GOP pulls every four years at its national convention when it parades the few minority elected officials it has and tries to make it appear that the Republican party has the welcome mat out for minorities.

Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., the man who disgraced himself by shouting "You lie" to President Obama during his healthcare speech earlier this week, appears to be the hero for those attending the March. Numerous signs proclaiming love and support for Wilson are evident.

If this march is truly reflective of America, and that is highly doubtful, then we truly are a nation in trouble.

I don"t recall you calling the Million Man March a 'blanket of black".....

The million man march was never made to be anything other than what it was, unlike the march today or the Republican Party.

Typical Liberal response to anything that threatens them in 2009. Invoke race. The American people are getting tired of it. But I have a funny feeling your ilk's going to learn this lesson in 2010.

I have a funny feeling your ilk, Mr. Spears, didn't learn the lesson of 2008.

Randy,
You watch way too much TV. Be careful, or it will rot your brain. I always tell my students to be careful about forming opinions based on what they see on TV because (especially in the last 5 years) the people shooting video of politically-charged events often let their bias show in the shooting or the editing. Don't assume only white people were at the march just because that's what you saw on TV.

I have never known C-SPAN to display any kind of prejudice in favor of any side of a political issue.

The best thing that could have happened to the Republican party was to lose the 2008 election. Thank you, Obama.

From Indiana:
I noticed that SAME thing, watching the March and the RNC convention! Where are the minority people??? They are with the party that is more fair to middle class and poor people, and NOT the party of the rich! So are MOST Americans, whether you put on that SHOW or not! And the rich might have medical insurance, but here in Indiana where employers offer NO insurance, and a 50 year old person is looking at an Anthem charge of $540 per month--we are looking forward to some kind of affordable insurance plan offered by President Obama. OUR state went for the President. We will stick by him. Must be nice to be able to AFFORD insurance AND afford to travel to Washington D.C. just because you can't stand having a Black President who is trying to do something to help ALL people! Shame on you! And Mr. Spears--don't call people "your ilk"--our family have always been Independents! Not everyone who voted for the President is a "liberal".

The term "of your ilk" seems to be used most often by those who have not better argument to offer and resort to that as their ultimate putdown.

As a small government guy myself, I understand the outrage over the Obama administration's spending. I really do.

But these people were not out marching in the streets when the last administration grew the federal debt by four trillion dollars in 8 years.

I was outraged back then too, but I seemed to be the only one. I hit rage fatigue 6+ years ago, and just don't care anymore. Meanwhile, this entire pack of morans was too busy at home admiring life-size cardboard cutouts of Bush in a flight suit.

Sorry, Tea-Baggers - nobody takes you seriously anymore. If you're only up in arms now, because a President who's only been in office for 7 months wants to add another couple trillion to the already staggeringly huge pile of crap you complacently allowed for the past 8 years, because Fox hadn't instructed you to be angry yet, you really are nothing more than astroturf.

Furthermore, looking at more photos of the weekend's teabaggers, it is pretty conspicuous how white and middle-aged they are. There are few people under 30 or minorities, in a nation where there are quite a lot of young people and minorities. They are also generally overweight and/or badly dressed, and their signs are confusingly historically illiterate.
