Today, Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) welcomed Missouri veterans visiting Washington, D.C. on an Honor Flight and helped remove barricades at the World War II Memorial so they could visit their memorial. Due to the government shutdown, the President’s Office of Management and Budget announced the closure of all national parks, including the National Mall, monuments, and memorials in Washington.
“It’s unconscionable that the Administration would close these outdoor memorials to our veterans and to the public,” said Hartzler. “I’ve long supported the mission of Honor Flight, and was deeply humbled to be present today to remove the barricades and help these American heroes visit their memorial. Our veterans and the American public deserve better than the political theater the administration has been putting on during this shutdown.”
“Since our visit, the President changed his policy and announced that the memorial will open to veterans groups, but sadly, remain barricaded to the American public. This is still unacceptable. All Americans should have access to these outdoor venues,” continued Hartzler. “It is time for the President to stop these theatrics and come to the table to end this shutdown.”
