Ed Emery, 71, passes away at Columbia hospital

Former Sen. Ed Emery, R-Lamar, 71, who was running for the Fourth District Congressional seat has died at a Columbia hospital, three days after collapsing during a speech to the Randolph County Republican Women's organization in Moberly.

Emery served two terms in the Senate and four terms in the House.

Word of his death spread quickly and tributes began to be posted on Twitter, including the following:

Seventh District Congressman Billy Long: Very saddened to learn of the passing of
@edemery. A true Gentleman and a great public servant that had announced his filing to run for #Congress 6/29/21. He was running in #Missouri CD-4. May he R.I.P.

Rep. Doug Richey, R-Excelsior Springs- We’ve suffered a tremendous loss in the death of former Senator Ed Emery. He was a gentleman, a statesman, and more importantly a faithful Christian. I count myself blessed to have known him as a friend.

Rep. Sara Walsh, R-Ashland- Heartbreaking to hear the word that Senator
@edemery has died. Missouri has lost a true statesman, committed Christian and honorable man who lived a life of integrity. Please join me in lifting up his family and friends in prayer.

Former Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal, D-University City- Senator @edemery was a public servant who arrived to work at the crack of dawn most mornings. It was a pleasure to know someone who listened & never compromised their values. He supported my senate efforts & prayed w me in challenging times. A great man & true servant of God.

Cass County Commissioner Ryan Johnson (also a candidate for the Republican 4th District nomination)- Late last night while driving home, Becky and I learned that Sen.
@edemery slipped the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of God. Ed was above all a kind, compassionate Christian gentleman & faithful public servant. Our prayers are with his beloved Rebecca & their family.

Rep. Shamed Dogan, R-Ballwin- Sad to hear about the passing of @edemery. He was a true gentleman, a man of tremendous integrity, and always a joy to work with. RIP.
