Ann Wagner: Biden student loan action comes at the expense of hardworking Missourians

(From Second District Congresswoman Ann Wagner)

Last week, President Biden took irresponsible action to forgive student loan debt, something that could cost Americans up to a trillion dollars.

This comes at the expense of hardworking Missourians who made the personal decision not to take out loans like these, or who worked hard to eliminate their debt as fast as possible.

I am deeply disappointed the Biden Administration is forcing everyday Americans to pay for loans they did not take out.

Make no mistake, this reckless policy does nothing to lower the cost of higher education and help those in need, it just gives away taxpayer dollars to higher income individuals and will make college more expensive.

Inflation is hurting working families, and we must be focused on helping them afford everyday expenses like gas, groceries, and utilities.

Did she vote for the government bailout of the airline and automobile industry? When she was at her private high school in St Louis did she pay for her own tuition? Did she pay for her own tuition while in college? The help that this loan repayment will help people that have worked to better educate themselves for a better future.

Additionally, not to mention the direct infusion of cash to the financial institutions that have back these loans and improve high learning institutions by easing the tuition burden. Watch the stock prices od these college loan companies will improve. Colleges and Universities will now have more students seek admission.

The cost of higher education has risen higher the past 25-30 years to price out the average person that does not have any family financial support.

Yes, everything has gone up in price. Not to scare you but, I am a Republican with a Master’s degree in economics and finance. I have worked in medical and biotech industry for 20+ years. My kids are on their own for their education and are paying their way. It is their job to find out their own careers and invest in their career. By no means will I write checks for my kids so they can stay in school for years doing nothing. All of these students with loans are doing the same thing. They are not getting bailed out, simply having some of their loans relieved.

The average cost of in-state university for 1 year is almost $20k. Not to mention their living expense if they are on their own. This is forgiveness is helping relieve about 1 year of school or debt. How much relief has our government given in corporate bail outs or foreign aid?

The loan help that these students or college grads are getting is helpful. This could be considered part of trickle up effect. Part of the school of thought by economist Keynes from the 1920s.

Good luck to you.

I’m still going to have to disagree with you, I respect your thoughts on this but at the end of the day, a contract was signed…
It’s amazing that we can pay a car off that cost 80k, in a short amount of time but not a student loan…
Most people don don’t have the right priorities and understanding that sometimes you need to do without, and I’m telling you doing without can be the biggest blessing you will likely never understand.

Have a great day
