Coltharp named interim principal at Royal Heights

Joplin Schools is pleased to announce Dr. Glenn Coltharp as the new interim principal at Royal Heights Elementary School. Dr. Coltharp has more than 40 years of experience in regional education, including elementary, secondary, post-secondary, and administration.

Superintendent of Joplin Schools Dr. Kerry Sachetta, stated, “We are very pleased Dr. Glenn Coltharp will be serving as our new interim principal at Royal Heights Elementary for the beginning of school. His expertise as an administrator and his familiarity with Joplin will serve our students and families very well as we get the school year started. Dr. Coltharp has had a long and distinguished career in education. 








"In addition, he began his career as an elementary teacher and later as an elementary principal. His extensive experience will assist our faculty and staff at Royal Heights immediately.”

Dr. Coltharp recently retired as President of Crowder College, a post that was preceded by Vice Presidency at the same institution, and various positions in the School of Education at Missouri Southern State University.

Prior to his career in higher education, Dr. Coltharp served at the K-12 level as a superintendent, assistant superintendent, middle school and elementary principal. He was also Principal of the Missouri State School for the Severely Handicapped and has taught kindergarten, second, and fourth grades.

As a graduate of Pittsburg State University, Dr. Coltharp received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, Master of Science degree in Elementary School Administration, and a Specialist degree in Education and School Administration. He later received his Doctorate degree in School Administration from Kansas State University.

Dr. Coltharp currently serves on the Missouri Department of Higher Education Council of Chief Academic Officers, representing community colleges in the State of Missouri. He also serves on the Missouri Advisory Board for Educator Preparation representing higher education and is working with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to strengthen teacher education in Missouri.








Dr. Coltharp stated, “It’s an honor to rejoin the Joplin School District. Earlier in my career, I was an elementary and middle school principal, as well as an assistant superintendent in the district. Royal Heights, as well as Joplin Schools, has a long tradition of educational excellence and I am excited to be part of the instructional program offered at Royal Heights. It’s an exciting time to be an Eagle!”

Dr. Coltharp is married to Dr. Hazel Coltharp, who is a professor in the mathematics department at Pittsburg State University. Together, they have two children: Dr. Jean Coltharp is an assistant professor in the mathematics department at MSSU, and Benjamin Coltharp is a teacher at Joplin High School.
