Star article explores money in Missouri attorney general race

The Kansas City Star offers its first real examination of the big money that is coming into the attorney general race between Republican Michael Gibbons and Democrat Chris Koster:

Well, attorneys do have a reputation for making a lot of money.

But $1.1 million from a Virginia campaign committee? $200,000 from a national attorneys general group? $140,000 from an opponent’s ex-wife?

That’s just crazy.

Both candidates for Missouri attorney general have raised serious funds in the weeks since campaign contribution limits were removed, and both appear poised for a frenzy of television advertising in the weeks leading up to Election Day.

A clear picture of revenues and expenditures for Democrat Chris Koster and Republican Michael Gibbons won’t be available until at least Oct. 15, when quarterly financial reports are due to the Missouri Ethics Commission. But the information available now shows both sides have raised staggering sums in advance of the Nov. 4 vote.
