Republic fires former Webb City football coach Thompson

The Republic Board of Education voted this week to remove Kurt Thompson as head football coach. Thompson, who has been at Republic for six years, won state championships at Webb City in 1992 and 1993:

Thompson was 135-46 for his career in nine seasons at Kickapoo and seven at Webb City. However, Thompson’s final season was marred by frustration on the sidelines. After a 2-0 start, he was ejected during a 48-6 loss to Ozark. Then, after a 41-6 loss to Nixa on Oct. 19, Thompson got into a postgame argument with Nixa coach Rich Rehagen about Nixa passing for a late touchdown.(Republic Athletic Director Greg) Garton would not comment specifically about Thompson’s coaching. But, generally speaking, he said incidents such as those are taken into account during evaluations.“A big part of any administrator’s job is enforcing the standards and policies set by the school district,” Garton said. “Anytime you evaluate a coach, you’re looking at anything.
