Besendorfer: Joplin Schools are doing well after tornado

In this interview with News Oklahoma, following the Moore tornado, Joplin R-8 Assistant Superintendent Dr. Angie Besendorfer talks about what she found in Moore when she arrived, how the schools in that community are doing, and then talks about how well Joplin Schools are doing after the May 22, 2011, Joplin Tornado and how it enabled the district to capitalize on technology opportunities such as the laptops for high school students and change how education takes place.

This from the same person who stated in interviews that there are silver linings in funnel clouds and that tornadoes bring opportunities. I suppose that is true, if the opportunities to which she refers are in the form of promoting one's own career. Please define what "well" is, Dr. Besendorfer. By what did you measure the success of your schools? By how many teachers you have slandered, run off, or fired? By sagging test scores? Community unhappiness? Please, point out to us what is successful about any of the choices you have made. I suppose all of the extra people you and Dr. Huff have hired have contributed to keeping the unemployment rate down. At taxpayer expense. And all of the trips you have taken have stimulated the economy--in other cities and countries. But other than that, things just aren't looking too great in R8.

Capitalizing on opportunities. Opportunism. Yes, that is what Dr. Besendorfer does best.

All I could think of was the best selling book by Naomi Klein.

The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism

It is the step beyond opportunism.
