Sarah Steelman, candidate for U.S. Senate announced her support of S.533 – The Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act of 2011- introduced by Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa. This act "LARA" addresses one of the major problems facing small business today: frivolous lawsuits.
"The Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act will help reduce frivolous litigation which raises costs for small business owners and prices for consumers," says Steelman. "The integrity of the civil justice system must be preserved for all people seeking justice; those who file frivolous lawsuits attack and erode our system of justice and must be sanctioned."
LARA helps rein in frivolous lawsuits by restoring mandatory sanctions on attorneys, law firms, or parties who file frivolous lawsuits. The proposal also permits monetary sanctions, including reimbursement of reasonable attorney's fees and litigation costs in connection with frivolous lawsuits. It also solves the problem of forum shopping equitably by precluding plaintiff's lawyers from filing lawsuits where there is no meaningful connection.
"At a time when unemployment in this country is above 9 percent, this bill helps restore a healthy economic climate conducive to job growth, by eliminating the threat of costly, meaningless lawsuits," stated Steelman.

That's a real statement from a lady married to one of Missouri's strongest proponents of defending trial attorneys.
Never mind her husband; she led the filibuster of tort reform twice while she was in the State Senate. This is a crass attempt to mislead voters.
If a case is considered "frivolous" the complaining party often must pay for legal fees.
Lawsuits filed that are deemed to be frivolous in the eyes of the court can be more burdensome for the filer. Often the person filing must pay for the defense's legal fees and can put the lawyer that filed it in even more trouble. This legislation is to ward off lawsuits, in general, and small businesses are not the people that she wants to help. She is distorting the meaning of frivolous.
