During its June 25 meeting, the R-8 Board of Education approved a plan which includes having Superintendent C. J. Huff deliver annual State of the District messages as part of an effort to make Joplin schools the place where everyone wants to come.
No word was mentioned on whether the state legislature and Missouri Supreme Court members would be invited.
The Comprehensive School Improvement Plan approved at the June 25 Joplin R-8 Board of Education meeting details how R-8 administrators plan to use a combination of social media, positive stories from the traditional media and "satisfaction surveys" to make Joplin "the school district of choice in southwest Missouri by demonstrating annual improvement in overall patron, parent, and student satisfaction."
That idea of improving and increasing the district's social media presence led to the call for applicants for 15 teachers to receive $1,000 stipends to manage Facebook pages for every school in the district.
The improvement plan includes five areas in which the district plans to improve between now and 2017. The media plan is the fourth standard and is reprinted below directly from the board documents found on the district website.

Is he going to charge the district 10 grand for his speech so he can tell them he's run the place into the ground?
All he can report right at the moment is everything is about as bad as it can get. There's nothing left to screw up. They're nothing if not thorough.
Lipstick on a pig
Really? Are they going to print the "unsatisfactory reports" from the parents. I want to be first in line.
Please tell me Huff won't be here in 2017. I am moving, if so.
New chant for opening day:
Hey hey, ho ho! Huff and Bessy have to go! Hey hey, ho ho! Huff and Bessy have to go! And so on. Very catchy. Sticks in your head all day.
Number One in wasting money. Absolute zero in everything else.
Finally plowed through the Waypoints and Indicators. Some interesting highlights:
Waypoint 1: Create a positive climate. In a time of oppression and teacher walk-out, I think that is a wash for a bit. But, you'll notice they omitted teacher satisfaction in this part.
Waypoint 2: Continue to lead in technology and teaching and learning. Are we leading now? Accreditation will only happen if Huff was successful in his pleas with DESE. If that's leading, I feel sorry for other districts.
Waypoint 6, Indicator 4: a minimum of 15 positive media stories per month. If we have 14, do we fluff up something? In a district that is in danger of losing accreditation, is trumping up 15 stories the biggest concern of the day? Hard to put a positive spin on teacher flight and sagging scores. But I'm sure that bevy of Communications staff people and the Eagle Communicators will be very creative in distracting from the more pressing issues of the day.
And what on earth can he say? We've spent all the money on unnecessary jobs and frivolous expenses, the students didn't learn much, we're unaccredited, the teachers have packed up and left, but let me show you the pictures from that very expensive DC trip?
Can't wait to see how they spin this mess.
We will all be crying by the time this year's state of the district speech is over.
