The death of Karen "Granny" Shaffer, the woman whose name adorns a number of Joplin-area restaurants, had been ably recognized by the electronic media I have noticed, both from their websites and from coverage I was able to watch on KSNF and KOAM.
It would be nice if The Joplin Globe would realize it is a local newspaper and that the way a local newspaper covers the deaths of prominent citizens says a lot about the heart and soul of that newspaper.
The Globe has botched it recently with the coverage of a number of well-known local citizens who have died, including its longtime columnist and reporter Gary Garton.
Tomorrow's page one should carry an article about Granny Shaffer. Don't save it for an editorial, or a Sunday column, or one of whatever it is Mike Pound writes on page three. If Janet Jackson's costume malfunction is a page-one story (and it was for the Globe) then the death of someone whose face, as well as her recipes and the fine taste of the food on her menu, were well-known throughout the area, should also receive top-drawer treatment.
