Mayo makes Murphy wait a day before telling him he's fired

Marshfield Superintendent Mark Mayo, formerly superintendent at Diamond, took his own sweet time telling longtime girls basketball coach Gary Murphy he had been fired.

Murphy, who has been the Blue Jays' coach for 22 years, winning four state championships, was let go by a 4-2 vote Monday night. Mayo waited until today to tell him, according to the Springfield News-Leader:

“I’m fearful for all coaches out there wondering if a little posse of parents can got get something done with the administration,” Murphy said. “But hey, that’s their right. I’m not upset with the parents. But it kind of makes you re-think coaching sometimes.”
At issue was Murphy’s intense, disciplinarian coaching style, which apparently soured among some parents of current players.
Mayo said the school board was concerned about participation numbers declining, acknowledging that some current members had threatened not to play next season had Murphy been retained.
