Carl Junction R-1 officials working on how to continue to provide services if school is canceled

(From Carl Junction Schools)

(Note: This was posted this morning prior to this afternoon's meeting between Carl Junction, Joplin, Carthage and Webb City superintendents and the Jasper County Health Department.)

Yesterday saw many more changes, including the canceling of the 4A Girls’ Basketball Final Four in which our girls were planning to participate.

We support the Missouri State High School Activities Association’s decision to cancel the event, but it still hurts. If you see one of our players who are a member of the 28-0 girls’ basketball team, give them a figurative hug and tell them what an amazing job they did.

This is a personal, hometown example of the many sacrifices our fellow citizens are making across this country to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

I am sure you have seen the closing of many area schools. Carl Junction will also be extending our spring break.

I am not sure of the duration of our closure. Our state department is working with our Governor’s office to help give guidance to schools. I fully expect Missouri to follow our surrounding states and announce a mandatory school closure time.

This afternoon, the area superintendents will meet with the area health departments to further discuss the closure of our schools. Since our combined schools serve over 20,000 students and 3,200 staff, we feel it is important that we develop a consistent message.

Starting last week, the administration began discussions of how we can continue to provide services to our students if we must cancel school. Tomorrow morning, an expanded team will meet to brainstorm ways we can efficiently provide a variety of services to our students and community.

We will work to leave no stone unturned, however, I do welcome positive, productive ideas from anyone. Criticism will simply be ignored! Please be patient; it will take a few days to organize our plans.

For over 15 years, I have strived to lead this district with respect, dignity, and guts. There is no plan to change that approach. I am fired up to do my part in leading this district during this challenging time. We will work hard, we will listen, and we will do what is necessary to take care of our kids and community. When this is over, we will have learned and become stronger. I believe in this community and this country.

Once we have more concrete information about our school closure duration, we will get that information out. I will also strive to keep our families updated on plans to provide services to our students. In the meantime, stay safe and I love you guys,

Phil Cook
Superintendent
