Schlupp: Precautions being taken as Senate returns to Jefferson City

(From Sen. Jill Schlupp, D-Creve Coeur)

Effective Monday April 6th, all of Missouri will be under a stay-at-home order until April 24th. This decision comes after medical professionals and hospitals pleaded with the Governor for weeks to issue this life-saving call. View the offical statewide order here.

On Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, the Senate will convene to vote on our supplemental budget. It is required to open access to federal stimulus dollars to support efforts to fight the virus and to provide a financial safety net for those who need it, including furloughed employees and small businesses.

Concerns over gathering with my colleagues from around the state are being minimized by the carefully developed plans for entering, leaving and voting within the chamber individually.

Clearly, this is work that cannot wait since we now have the information needed from the federal government to pass our legislation.

The full Senate votes on Wednesday. I will be there and will be recognizable (if you were allowed to attend) by my home-made mask and food-handling gloves.

As I prepare, it further drives home the stress felt and sacrifice exercised everyday by our first responders: our medical personnel, our grocery and pharmacy workers, our postal and delivery service employees, and more. Thank you for your work and sacrifice. This will have to serve as my hug.
