A former Webb City Junior High School math teacher and coach who molested a student in 2019 was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday...but may be back on the streets in four months.
During a sentencing hearing Monday in Jasper County Circuit Court, Judge Gayle Crane ordered Nicholas Popejoy, 29, committed to the Sex Offender Assessment Unit.
Following an assessment in 120 days, a decision will be made on whether Popejoy should be released on probation or remain behind bars.
Popejoy pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of third degree child molestation January 11 after reaching an agreement with the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's office. The original charge was statutory sodomy. A second felony charge, sexual contact with a student, was dismissed.
Popejoy had been with the Webb City R-7 School District since 2014 and has been a junior high basketball and track coach and more recently was freshman basketball coach.
Before he was hired at Webb City, Popejoy was a junior high track coach at USD 249 in Frontenac, Kansas from 2012 to 2014 and served as a youth tutor at the school while attending Pittsburg State University.
Outside of the district, Popejoy has coached the Southwest Missouri Vault Club and between July 28 and August 3, he accompanied five pole vaulters to Greensboro, North Carolina for an AAU Junior Olympics competition.
R-7 officials placed Popejoy on leave November 15, 2019 and he was arrested at the school week later when he arrived to pick up his belongings.
The school district placed Popejoy on leave and he resigned a few days later.

THIS IS CRAP and the DA's OFFICE AND JUDGE CRANE - - SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS - - NO ONE ELSE - WOULD HAVE GOT THIS SENTENCE - - WHY SHOULD - NICHOLAS POPEJOY - RECEIVE - SPECIAL TREATMENT - -
STOP FEELING SORRY FOR THESE CRIMINALS - AND START FEELING SYMPATHY FOR THEIR VICTIMS.
Why did I know it was a white person?
Child molesters when they have committed the crime without any doubt should be put to death. Immediately. Quit letting these people stay in prison for years. They are sick individuals who cannot be rehabilitated.

Makes you really question these judges. One may wonder what illegal activity their involved with. To place a sex offender with a soft punishment then what the victim(s) endures. Makes you really want to take deep measurements into these judges. The truth will alway prevail
