Add your name to the Turner Report Newsletter mailing list

Readers,

As many of you are aware, a couple of weeks ago I began publishing a daily Turner Report Newsletter.

The newsletter was a necessity because much of the traffic the Turner Report, Inside Joplin and Inside Joplin Obituaries receive comes from Facebook links. Recent changes in Facebook's algorithms have sliced my referrals from that source by about 70 percent.

The changes are in line with Facebook's problems in recent years with links from news and information sources, many of which provided little or no news or information. Unfortunately, those of us who have made an effort to be both informative and factual were swept away with the rest of them.

I have always been aware that changes in Facebook's algorithms could harm this one-man news operation, so I have considered launching a newsletter for the past few years.

I have had Facebook friends and followers who have asked recently if I am still writing because they had not seen anything from me. Others say they only see some of what I have posted.

Thus, the Turner Report Newsletter.

Each day's newsletter includes the following features:

-Opening column- I write a brief daily column about whatever has caught my interest

-Turner Report Links- A link to each Turner Report post since the previous newsletter was published

-Inside Joplin Links- A link to each Inside Joplin post since the previous newsletter was published

-Inside Joplin Obituaries Links- A link to each Inside Joplin Obituaries post since the previous newsletter was published. The previews to those obituaries are also included with photos of those who have passed on. The photos are not included in the sample newsletter below.

-Links of Interest- These are posts from other news sources about area and state news, or other items that I think might interest you.

-Today's Videos- A collection of videos from local, state and national sources that I think might interest you

The newsletter will also contain links from my other less-updated blogs, while the links to the Turner Report will occasionally include links to posts from one, two, five or 10 years ago.

You will find it much easier to find the day's news and features all in one place and select those that interest you.

How this news operation makes money

Since I started publishing the newsletter, I have had two people ask me just how I make money from a news operation that offers free newsletters and has no pay wall (such as the ones the Joplin Globe, Springfield News-Leader, Kansas City Star and other news websites have).

I make money in three ways.

1. Advertising- You have noticed that each of my posts contains advertising, including this one. The simple fact is the more readers I have, the more money I will make from the advertising.

2. Voluntary subscriptions and contributions- As I noted earlier, it does not cost a cent to visit this blog or my other blogs, but the blogs do take a lot of time and effort. In addition to the posts on the Turner Report and Inside Joplin, approximately 2,000 free obituaries have been posted each year since 2013 on Inside Joplin Obituaries. Those of you who appreciate the service and can afford to do so can take a voluntary subscription if you wish- $30 annually, $3 monthly or $1 weekly through the PayPal links that I occasionally place in blog posts, including this one. 3. My books- My books are available on Amazon and at local bookstores and occasionally I provide Amazon links to them. Many of the people who buy the books are people who became acquainted with my writing through my blogs and through Facebook.

Turner Report Newsletter October 11, 2022

After my rant the other day about the parking spaces the Walmart Neighborhood Market on 7^th Street is reserving for people who use the app and complaints I have made about the company pushing us toward using the self-serve checkout, I apparently missed another horrible thing that happens at Walmart.

The first item under "Links of Interest" below is a Missouri blogger's assertion that only in Missouri do Walmart shoppers stop in the middle of the aisle to catch up with their neighbors.

Apparently, they clog up the aisles and slow the shopping process.

Is this really a problem?

Sad to hear of the death of a talented actress, Angela Lansbury. In the 12 years that Murder She Wrote was on, Lansbury was nominated for the Best Actress in a Dramatic Series Emmy 12 times. She never won.

She probably should have won it every year. What other actress could have helped viewers overlook the idea that Cabot Cove must have been the murder capital of the United States and that every friend or relative of Jessica Fletcher was going to get charged with murder at some point?

Lansbury's lengthy career started with an Oscar nomination when she was a teenager in 1944's Gaslight and another one the following year for The Picture of Dorian Gray.

My favorites of her silver screen performances were in the 1956 comedy The Court Jester with Danny Kaye and in The Manchurian Candidate, where she played one of the greatest villains to ever appear on screen (and one of the worst mothers).

She followed that up a few years later by playing a singing teapot in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Now that is an actress!
