Joplin City Council set to allow axe throwing club to admit teens despite alcohol sales

A recommendation approved by city administration to allow an axe-throwing club to admit people under age 21 despite its sale of alcoholic beverages will come before Joplin City Council when it meets 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall.

Documentation provided to the council indicates council members reacted favorably to the suggestion during an October 3 informal meeting.

From the documentation:

A presentation and request was presented to the City Council at the October 3, 2022 informal council meeting by business owner Michelle Fowler of the Main Street Axe Company.

The request was to allow her business, an axe throwing club, to be given an exemption under sections 10-17 and 10-82 to allow persons under 21 in her establishment because the business is licensed to sell intoxicating liquor and beer.

She stated that she derives eighty percent (80%) of her income from the entertainment part of her business, that includes axe throwing, ping pong, skeeball and a soon-to-be added disc golf putting league.

After the presentation, the City Council directed the City Attorney to bring an amendment to the Code to a future meeting to allow this exemption.

The ordinance to be voted on Monday would provide a specific exemption to alcohol laws for axe throwing clubs.

A similar exemption is already in place for bowling alleys.
