No murder charges for Oklahoma teen in double-fatality crash on Main, cited for lesser felony, misdemeanor

Joplin Police recommended two counts of murder in the second degree for a Welch, Oklahoma teen involved in a deadly double fatality crash at Casey's on Main Saturday.

The Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's office instead elected to charge Colton F. Goddard, 18, with a felony, resisting arrest by fleeing and a misdemeanor, careless and imprudent driving.

Goddard and Taran Morris, 20, Miami, Oklahoma were allegedly riding their motorcycles at high rates of speed down Main and took off after a Joplin police officer attempted to stop them at a light.

The police department's news release indicated Goddard and Morris were traveling at speeds of 80 to 100 miles per hour down Main, running red lights in the process. Morris collided with a motorcycle driven by Mark McGowen, 60, as he pulled out of Casey's.

Both men were killed.

After he was initially held on no bond, a $25,000 surety bond was set for Goddard, who has bonded out.

Under the conditions of his bond, Goddard has been placed on house arrest and must wear an ankle monitor (which he will pay for). He is not allowed to come to Missouri unless he is meeting with his lawyer and attending a court hearing and he is not to drive any motor vehicle or motorcycle.

Goddard is represented by Joplin attorney Phil Glades.

Another senseless murder by a reckless driver goes unpunished. There is no accountability assigned by our prosecutor yet again.

The murderer died dummy....

The one who caused the two deaths is the young man that the article is about. This is getting out of hand the number of careless & reckless drivers in this area in the last couple of months that have taken lives & not been charged with vehicular homocide or something major. This young men & women are getting off so easy & isn't right. The punishment or lack there of, is basically showing people that they will not be properly held accountable.
