Internal memo says GateHouse Media will cut jobs

An internal memo obtained by the Boston Herald indicates GateHouse Media, formerly Liberty Group Publishing, will be eliminating some jobs at the string of New England newspapers it recently bought.
The memo says:

"While it’s clear we can vastly improve and expand our reach for advertisers in the south region, as well as our community news coverage, functional areas of the two companies will be combined,We expect this will result in some staff reductions, although we hope to minimize any impact."

GateHouse owns the Joplin Daily, Carthage Press, Neosho Daily News, Big Nickel, and Neosho Post, as well as more than 300 newspapers across the United States.

It's the world of corporate newspapering, or any corporate business for that matter. You've got to make a profit for those investors.

Look at today's Joplin Globe, and the ad across the bottom of the front page. The first for them, I think, unless you count the casino "post it note" that was stuck to the front page the same day they ran a story about the new casino opening a few weeks ago.

While I don't wish anyone to lose their jobs I do wish there would finally be a "shake up" at the Neosho Daily News who for years has been not so great. There seems to be a lot of personal gab in there from people I don't care to hear from or about and is just not good writing..including Todd Higdon and Buzz Ball. Rick Rogers and John Ford are interesting and enjoyable but let's cut the others and do some real stories about what is really going on and not just waste the paper on who you or your buddy aren't kin to, or buddies with that is doing wrong. There have been many, many stories I personally have known of that the Daily passed over because of who the person was kin to, buddies with or did business with. Come on run the paper like it should be.
