Public defender files motion to suppress Memorial Middle School shooter's statements

Brett Meeker, one of the public defenders representing Memorial Middle School shooter Thomas Gregory White, filed a motion Aug. 10 to suppress the statement her client made to authorities.
White, 14, is charged with two counts of assault, plus single counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and attempted escape in connection with the Oct. 7 incident, in which he entered Memorial Middle School with an assault rifle just before the beginning of a school day, fired the weapon into the ceiling, then attempted to fire at Principal Steven Gilbreth, but the weapon jammed.
Ms. Meeker has also filed a motion for continuance. Presently, White's trial is scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 20, in Jasper County Circuit Court. He is being tried as an adult.
