Accused killer of Carthage couple asks to have charges dismissed

One of the two men charged with murdering Bob and Ellen Sheldon, ownners of the Old Cabin Shop in Carthage Oct. 11, 2008, is asking to have his charges dropped.

Online Jasper County Circuit Court records show that Christopher Hatley, the public defender representing Matthew Laurin, 19, Springfield, filed a motion Aug. 7 asking that the case against his client be dismissed. Investigators have indicated that Laurin fingered his co-defendant Darren Winans, 21, Jasper, as the man who stabbed the Sheldons to death.

Judge Richard Copeland granted Hatley's request for a change of judge and a pre-trial confernece scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25 will be held before Judge Joseph Schoeberl.

Winans' hearing is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 28 in Judge Copeland's court.
